Indexing is the process of scanning information on web pages and creating a list that can then be quickly referenced when an Internet user performs a Google search.
What happens when I request Google indexing?
We start by submitting your sitemap to Google letting them know your pages exist. This sitemap lists the URLs for all the catalog records you are sharing. The search engine will go through the sitemap and send “crawlers” out to scan the information on your pages. That scanned information is put into the index so that your pages can appear when someone performs a search.
Google does not guarantee that every page in the sitemap will be indexed, but the crawlers periodically go back through the pages listed in your sitemap to add new pages or remove pages that may no longer exist. Your sitemap is automatically updated every time you upload data to your PastPerfect Online site.
How long does the indexing take?
With millions of websites being added to Google’s indexes each week, please allow four to eight weeks for your catalog records to be indexed with these search engines. There is no way to force immediate indexing of your site.
Going forward, Google crawlers will periodically go back through to re-gather information, removing bad links and adding new links; however, we have no control over how often the crawlers will access your pages.
Because of these potential delays, please be sure your site meets your own professional expectations before submitting the site to these search engines. Unlike PastPerfect Online, changes made to your records in the Google index may take weeks or months to filter through to the search engine search results pages, due to the number of websites being indexed across the web. Please take care to check for fields that you do not want included, spelling issues, and major mistakes made during data entry.
How do I request indexing for my PastPerfect Online site?
It’s easy! When your site meets your professional expectations, send an e-mail to pposupport@museumsoftware.com or call 1-800-562-6080 and request that your site be submitted to Google for indexing. We’ll submit your site and that’s it!
